It has no locking torque convertor and can't handle much in the way of input torque. The AT545 is the cheapest option, and always was. They need them durable but at the lowest price they can get. School Districts are poor, and frequently need Bond Issues to buy new buses. You have to understand WHY school districts chose that combination most frequently. There is much truth in this, but there are also caveats. If you've found a great bus-with an AT545-buy it, I would. After International discontinued the DT360, the DT466 was immediately "de-rated" to match with the AT545 and customers got what they wanted. For years operators that wanted Internationals workhorse DT466 were forced to purchase the MT643, a costly options. Sure the MT643 is heavier duty and locks up in 4th, it was needed for certain engines, large transit style school buses and most rear engines. Not only is the AT545 reliable, in the worst case scenario a failure did occur rebuilt AT545's are readily available for short money-far cheaper than having your car's tranny rebuilt. After all, it was the transmission that made standard transmissions disappear by the late 80's. It was the transmission of choice for the majority of school bus operators. The AT545 was the primary transmission found in conventional school buses, and forward engine TC-2000's for decades.
